Practical Landscaping Plans

The most practical way of going about designing a garden or front yard or patio is to create a wish list. This is the first step of your landscaping plan. Think hard and decide what theme you would like your garden to be based on; which mood would suit the designs; the end and objective of the finished landscaped garden; optimum space utilization; functionality; color coordination and various other such things.

Foundation plans

Do you want to create an ornamental garden just for the heck of it? Or do you plan to keep aside space for your kids’ playing area and perhaps add a pool?

Will there be a kitchen garden as well? How about a shady retreat where you can spend some quiet moments alone? On the basis of all these needs and requirements, you will pivot your landscaping plans.

Education and research plans

Your next step is to educate yourself on the designs, materials, flora and fauna, tools and equipments, techniques, soil type and climate and other such things.

For this you need to extensively study and do a lot of research in the internet or in the library. Stay away from “one size fits all” designs. You have to be innovative and creative as well as practical.

Make practical and feasible plans for watering system and irrigation.

Putting the plans on paper

The next step involves drawing out a rough sketch of all the design elements on a large sheet of paper just like interior designers or architects. You don’t need to be a top notch artist to do it. A plain and simple rough primitive sketch will do, as long as it is complete and understandable.

Plans for plants

Don’t go for fancy exotic plants sourced from far off countries. It’s better to settle for low maintenance hassle free native plants. You have to remember that all kinds of plants can’t survive in all kinds of climates and soil types.

When you plant flowering plants and shrubs, it doesn’t mean planting a few prize winning potted flowering plants here and there in your garden in a hap hazard manner.

Always buy mature plants keeping in mind factors like color, zone hardiness, width, height, moisture needs, bloom time, need for shade and sun, invasiveness, twining, reseeding etc.

You have to keep sufficient distance between the plants to allow them to grow properly.
